A. Savage COLOR STUDIES 2015
JULY 10 – SEPT 1

OPENING RECEPTION
July 10th
7 – 10

Well known for his musical contributions to bands such as Parquet Courts, PCPC and Wiccans, the visual art of A. Savage remains largely unknown outside of cult circles. Color Studies 2015 is Savage’s first solo exhibition, and is composed entirely of serigraphy created this year.

“I called the show Color Studies because I wanted to focus on colors that don’t appear in my palette often; you’ll find a lot of salmon pink and pastel colors — basically stuff I’ve been afraid to use because I wasn’t quite sure how,” Savage explains. The work finds influence in John Wesley, Edward Hopper, Ray Johnson and Raymond Pettibon. “I like images that are familiar and ordinary, but hinged on an unsettling emotion.”

“For Color Studies 2015, his first solo exhibition proper, Savage employs the same proletarian techniques, presenting a series of serigraphs that employ a keen (if not off-kilter) interest in color and the graphic quality of line. The heady still-lifes and close cropped portraits — of men wrestling passionately, a woman eating chicken, and ghosts conspiring — have an emotional resonance that is belied by a sickly sweet pastel palette and a bold, warbly line throughout. While Savage’s new work has echoes of his other lives, it establishes a new visual language all its own.”
